Semidesertic plants

Mezquite
The most conspicuous tree in this biota is the mezquite, of which we have one subspecies (Prosopis velutina). We can see the photo of this plant. Click on it, to see it larger.

Besides this plant, we also have a small acacia (Acacia gregii) which is a small bush with crooked spines, that can be found in rocky hills; while in other regions we will find the Ocotillo (Fouquiera splendens), which is a plant formed by long straight branches covered with spines and small leaves.

SaguaroWe can also find different species of agaves, as well as yuccas, of which the most common is bayoneta (Yucca baccata, var. brevifolia), as well as Yucca schottii. These two can be distinguished among themselves by their leave edges: in the first species, they are not separated into fibers, while in the second they do. We will also find nolinas (Nolina microcarpa), Sotol (Dasylirion wheeleri); as well as several cactaceae, of which there are a few species of nopales and choyas (Opuntia). Small cacti (Echinocereus, Mammilaria, Coryphantha). However, the most important plant in the desert is the saguaro (Cereus), of which a photo can be seen at the left. Many of the areas that today have been covered by semidesertic plants within this Municipality, were previously prairies, like those located further East, towards Cananea. This vegetation has disappeared today, due to overgrassing, in a growing process of desertification of this Municipality.
