Red Tail Hawk

Buteo jamaicencis

It is a large hawk. Dark brown colored above, and typically lighter below, with a dark band in the belly. The red tail has a narrow band with lighter tip.

It has a strong scream, long and descending in tone: "kiaaaaaarrrrrr".

It can be commonly seen along the highways, standing in the posts, where it will remain for hours until it sees an animal and flies to hunt it.
