White tailed deer

Odocoileus virginianus couesi

It's a small deer, of gray colour with some touches of brown to cinnamon in the legs.

The belly and the interior side of the legs are white. It is distinguished from the Mule Deer mainly by having a wide white tail which is raised when it is frightened and running (as in the right photo, above).

It has large ears. Small but robust antlers, curved toward the front.

Only the male has antlers, which it loses in the Spring.

The fawns, commonly twins, are born in the middle of July.

Mule deer

Odocoileus hemionus crooki

It is a large deer, with small tail with a black spot in the tip (as in the right photo, above).

It has a dark gray back, with a darker band along it.

The back of the legs gradually turn into light cinnamon colour.

The belly and the middle of the tail are white.

The antlers are heavy and elongated before bifurcated in points.

Their long ears have given them the name of "burro" (donkey), which by corruption has turned into "bura"
