Ursus americanus
The bear lives in the highest mountains within the Municipality, although during the dry seasons, before the Summer rains begin, they can go down looking for water and food. For instance, near Nogales, in Tucson, Arizona, it is a common occurrence to find a bear wandering among the houses located near the Mountains. Also within the Nogales city limits, they are frequently captured, and later released in the wilderness.
Black bears have a variety of colour phases: black, brown, bronze as well as white. They consume a varied diet, although it is based in the fruit of the juniper, pinions, acorns, wild berries and other native fruits.
After a gestation period of some seven months, the cubs are born during the winter.
In this region, althouth their activity diminishes during Winter, they don't hybernate, as they do in colder regions.
