Nogales is a City
The first day of 1920, the Official State Newspaper publishes the law elevating Nogales to a City. (You can see it´s text here)
This is a city whose main barrios are: El Cementerio (Rosario), Cañada de los Locos (Buenos Aires), El Embarcadero, El Cementerio Nuevo (Héroes), Pierson (en el cerro), Aguirre, Cañada Vázquez, Ranchito, Rastro Viejo, Colonia Sonora, and Rastro Nuevo .
The following month, on the 5th, the Director of the Municipal Hospital is changed. Dr. Sandoval is replaced by Dr. Priego.
While this happens, in central Mexico, the schism between Carrancistas and Obregonistas will lead to the murder of Carranza, followed by Obregon´s Presidency.
By then, Nogales has become the port of exportation to Arizona of produce, coming not only from Sonora but also from Sinaloa.
Nogales Custom Agents, who again increase in numbers, will witness a steady increase of international trade up to several million dollars. This is a different kind of trade, different from the weapons and ammunition that used to be exported during the previous years. The rest of the nogalenses will have to resort to some booth at the Municipal Market, working in Nogales, Arizona, or tourism, both legal or illegal.
Parallel to this economic process in Nogales, Sonora, since 1918 Nogales, Arizona has seen that the stores that used to attend to the dressing needs of the soldiers, and due to the closing of the military post there, are now reorienting their market towards the mexican customers.
However, this is still an incipient trade that will continue growing through those years, forming at the same time a new economic border system.
